NASCAR is BACK.
The sport hit the track for the first time in 2025 tonight, as the Cup Series cars took to Bowman Gray Stadium in North Carolina for the heat races ahead of tomorrow night’s Cook Out Clash.
It’s just an exhibition race, but the event marks the first NASCAR Cup Series race at the quarter-mile Bowman Gray since 1971, so fans were clearly excited not only for the start of the 2025 season but also to have racing back on one of the country’s oldest racetracks.
The cars took to the track earlier this evening for practice, with practice times being used to set the lineup for four heat races. The top 5 from each heat race will advance to tomorrow night’s Clash, with the remaining teams competing in the Last Chance Qualifier tomorrow ahead of the main event.
One driver who secured his spot in the Clash tonight was Bubba Wallace, who finished 4th in the second heat race and will start the main event tomorrow night in 14th.
And one thing that hasn’t changed from last season is that fans still have some…well, pretty strong opinions about Bubba.
The driver of the #23 car for 23XI Racing, which is owned by Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin, has always been one of the more polarizing figures in the sport. And that was on full display at Bowman Gray tonight, as a photo posted to Twitter showed a fan giving Bubba the middle finger as he went by during his heat race.
For a second I thought @BubbaWallace was number-one on the board at @nascarclash. 🤔 pic.twitter.com/cZV24Hhhw8

Surely just telling him he’s #1, right?
Well Bubba, who said last year that he had taken a break from social media to improve his mental health, is apparently back on Twitter and jumped in with his own comments on the fan:
“I’m gonna guess more fingers than teeth on that cat”

Ouch, Bubba from the top rope.
Of course the reaction to Bubba’s comments were pretty predictable, with many loving it and others trolling Bubba with comments about not being able to win. But you’ve gotta admit, that was a good comeback on Bubba’s part.
It’s been an eventful few months for Bubba, who welcomed his first child back in November with his wife Amanda. His race team has been embroiled in an antitrust lawsuit with NASCAR, with the team claiming that the sport is an illegal monopoly after a breakdown in negotiations over a new charter agreement last season.
During the offseason, a judge granted 23XI and Front Row Motorsports, the two teams that refused to sign the charter agreement and filed the lawsuit, a temporary injunction that allows them to compete as chartered teams and guarantees them a spot in each Cup Series race this season.
Trial in the case is set for December, with the court wanting to resolve the dispute before the 2026 Cup Series season. But regardless of who wins, the outcome could mean big changes are coming to NASCAR in the future.
One thing that’s never going to change, though: There will still be plenty of fans who love to hate Bubba Wallace.
