Sierra Ferrell better make some room on the mantle.
Last year was the era of Sierra Ferrell. The Appalachian Fairy blew fans away by releasing her sophomore record, Trail Of Tears. While the entire record is impressive and filled with music that shows the unique blend of country, folk, bluegrass, jazz, and blues that create the enticing sound Ferrell is known for, one single stood out among fans and has become almost anthemic.
The final single shared with the fans before gifting them the entire record, “American Dreaming.”

The road dog anthem highlighted the pros and cons of spending your life on the road while also trying to maintain relationships, hoping to settle down one day, and the exhaustion of chasing the American Dream as a musician. As Ferrell is a true road dog, there was no better artist to sing these vulnerable words than her. Penned by Melody Walker and Ferrell, this song was one that fans could not get enough of, and it deservingly won Ferrell two Grammy Awards for Best Americana Performance and Best American Roots Song.
During her acceptance speech for Best Americana Performance, Ferrell noted how hard life on the road can sometimes be and how she finds beauty in the struggle.
“Life is hard, touring is hard. Touring is hard; it’s honestly very unnatural. But it’s beautiful to get out there and share… and share. Because we all deserve to share our things. So I love y’all. Thank you.”
During her speech for Best American Roots Song, Ferrell noted that the American Dream is a weird concept before she brought Melody Walker to the stage.
“Get on up here! Melody is coming up here. Y’all, she came over to my house, and she goes, ‘Listen, listen. I have an idea.’ She said, ‘I have this song “American Dreaming.”‘ And honestly, I didn’t really know what to say to that because, you know, the American Dream is kind of a weird thing.”
Melody then thanked Ferrell for believing her her songwriting and for helping finish the song she brought to Ferrell.
Ferrell also won the Grammy Award for Best American Roots Performance for “Lighthouse,” and her sophomore record was named Best Americana Album.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll keep saying it with all the air in my lungs: Sierra Ferrell is an out-of-this-world talent and deserves this recognition from The Recording Academy.
The Era of Sierra continues, and we are HERE for it.
