Keep booing, that’ll be your national anthem soon too.
President Donald Trump ruffled some Canadian feathers last year when he floated the idea of Canada joining the United States, even trolling Prime Minister Justin Trudeau by referring to him as “Governor Trudeau.”

And earlier this week, President Trump announced that he would be implementing 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, which the White House says is meant to pressure the countries into stopping the flow of fentanyl and illegal immigrants into the country.
In a post to his Truth Social platform today after signing the order implementing the new tariffs, Trump explaining his reasoning for taking action:
“Today, I have implemented a 25% Tariff on Imports from Mexico and Canada (10% on Canadian Energy), and a 10% additional Tariff on China. This was done through the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) because of the major threat of illegal aliens and deadly drugs killing our Citizens, including fentanyl. We need to protect Americans, and it is my duty as President to ensure the safety of all. I made a promise on my Campaign to stop the flood of illegal aliens and drugs from pouring across our Borders, and Americans overwhelmingly voted in favor of it.”
Well naturally Canada wasn’t exactly happy about the new tariffs, and Trudeau took a break from dressing up in blackface and marching in pride parades to issue a response to Trump. On Twitter, the outgoing prime minister said that Canada “did not want this” but is prepared.
“The United States has confirmed that it intends to impose 25% tariffs on most Canadian goods, with 10% tariffs on energy, starting February 4. I’ve met with the Premiers and our Cabinet today, and I’ll be speaking with President Sheinbaum of Mexico shortly. We did not want this, but Canada is prepared. I’ll be addressing Canadians later this evening.”

And during a press conference this evening, Trudeau announced his response, encouraging Canadians to avoid American products and imposing his own 25% tariff on $150 billion in American goods.
Trump has yet to respond to Trudeau’s announcement, but earlier this evening it appears the people of Canada made their feelings known on the new tariffs imposed by the United States too.
During an NHL matchup between the Ottawa Senators and the Minnesota Wild tonight, the fans in Ottawa began booing the Star Spangled Banner in an apparent show of their displeasure with the US:
The crowd at the #Sens game in Ottawa boo’s the U.S. National anthem. Then belts out the Canadian anthem. Tariffs related? #cdnpoli pic.twitter.com/M6Zv2EXVpE

Seems like Terrance and Phillip aren’t happy. (If you get that reference, good job).
Unfortunately things didn’t get much better for the Minnesota Wild tonight in Ottawa, with the Canadian team apparently taking out their country’s frustration on the hockey team and currently winning 6-0 in the third period.
While we still have to wait to see whether Trump will respond further now that Trudeau has announced tariffs of his own, Governor Greg Abbott of Texas had his own warning for the Canadian prime minister earlier this evening, reminding him that his state had a larger economy than Trudeau’s entire country:
Careful Trudeau.
The Texas economy is larger than Canada’s.
And we’re not afraid to use it. https://t.co/vAjGS5COV2

Guess we’ll have to wait and see how it all plays out. But when the Canadians are booing, you know they’re not happy.
