Country music showing out at the Waste Management Open.
Known affectionately as “The People’s Open,” the Waste Management Open is the perfect appetizer for the Super Bowl. If you’ve never checked it out, it’s one of the rowdiest golf tournaments… scratch that, it is THE rowdy golf tournament on the PGA Tour’s schedule. It traditionally starts on the Thursday before the “Big Game” and concludes just before the Super Bowl kicks off on Sunday.
Last year, things got a little too unhinged at TPC Scottsdale. On Saturday of 2024’s event, the tournament accidentally let too many spectators into the premises, seemingly not even checking tickets all that closely, which led to the golf course being over capacity. The issues that came with that – along with those in attendance getting too hammered and obnoxiously loud – even led to a suspension of alcohol sales.
So the event organizers will obviously be trying to avoid a repeat of last year’s disaster, but that’s easier said than done when you have a hole on the course that’s referred to by fans as the “Party Hole.”
Number 16 at TPC Scottsdale is probably the best thing that professional golf has going for it (besides The Masters). Fans are usually expected to be quiet at golf tournaments, but this fully-enclosed Par 3 goes against the grain, and golf fans absolutely love it. Golfers that come into this hole often pump up the crowd before they hit their tee shots, and a great shot (and sometimes even a hole-in-one) blows the figurative roof off the place.
Stands, suites, and seating surround the unique hole out in the desert, giving it the nickname of “The Coliseum” and allowing for a high-energy, party-like atmosphere for the entire weekend that the Waste Management occurs. There’s a lot of etiquette in golf, but on this hole, that all gets thrown out the window, and beer often gets thrown onto the course.
It’s a beautiful thing.
And earlier today, celebrities, former athletes, artists and whoever else that was interested paired up with pro golfers and got the Waste Management festivities officially started. The Annexus Pro-Am, which had the amateurs play 18 holes and the pros only play 9, saw the likes of Michael Phelps and Aaron Rodgers tee it up and take on TPC Scottsdale. It also featured country music stars Luke Bryan and Jelly Roll.
Luke Bryan shared a video of himself earlier today walking down the luscious, green fairways of the course a couple of holes before he was set to take on the iconic 16th hole:

Thanks for the update Luke.
Bryan eventually reached the 16th, but we never got another update from him. I’m not sure why he said to “stay tuned.” But anyways, someone else was there to capture the country star’s moment on 16, and as he was being announced, he danced to “That’s My Kind of Night” and faked a Happy Gilmore swing.
Take a look:

Good to see that Luke Bryan was having himself a good time.
As for Jelly Roll, the “I Am Not Okay” singer reportedly missed his 9:50 tee time. The rapper-turned-country-artist showed up about 30 minutes after he was supposed to, and since he was late anyways, he went ahead and stopped on the first tee for an autograph session:
So cool! Jelly Roll is on the course today at the Waste Management Pro-Am and stopped with fans on the green after his first tee! ⛳️ He even FaceTimed a student who couldn’t make it to the event! #abc15 #phoenixopen #proam #jellyroll pic.twitter.com/DzJWyVVZlF

Eventually, Jelly Roll caught up to his group and started actually hitting golf shots. The country star briefly took over the PGA Tour’s social media as he walked through the long tunnel into the stadium portion of the 16th hole.
The clip that he took in selfie-mode provided some cool perspective into how it actually feels to walk into one of the most famous holes in golf:

And fortunately, someone was actually able to capture footage of Jelly Roll’s tee shot on the stadium-surrounded Par 3. Judging by his reaction (he fell backwards onto the tee box in embarrassment), Jelly Roll didn’t like how his shot turned out:

The good news for Jelly Roll is that he’ll be able to redeem himself at TPC Scottsdale by doing something he’s likely a little bit more comfortable with: performing. Wednesday night, Jelly Roll will headline the Coors Light Birds Nest concert series on the premises of the Waste Management Open.
Treaty Oak Revival is even set to open for him… not a bad lineup at all. And for those interested, Luke Bryan is set to perform the same venue on Thursday night.
